Branding
Know, and Brand Thyself

A Brief History

Branding is the process of creating brand recognition with a name, slogan or logo. Branding helps people identify a logo with your product or service and think of you.

Logos may contain any combination of text, graphics or fonts. A good branding logo uses the combination of colors, fonts and symbols to embody the spirit and values of your company.

Branding has become a very important part of the advertising industry today. It has even become part of our pop culture. For example when I say “Just Do It”, you think…. Nike.

Or when you see this logo.

NFL

You think football.

Branding in the world of marketing began in the 19th. century. Packaged goods like Kellogg’s cereal and Uncle Ben’s Rice were among the first to use branding.

In the industrial age many household items such as soap began to be manufactured in large factories instead of being made in the home. When these companies were shipping their goods, a branded logo was the way they would label the boxes and barrels so they could quickly recognize their product from the others.

The mass produced goods from these factories had to compete against local goods to win the business of the public. Branding was the way that companies like Coca-Cola convinced the public to put their trust in the products. Branding a logo or slogan helped people become familiar with new items.

James Walter Thompson around the year 1900 wrote an article explaining trademark advertising. This would become what we call branding today. Companies began branding their products with the use of slogans, radio jingles and logos.

In the 1930’s and 40’s manufactures began to learn that people would associate such things as youthfulness or romance with their products. People were buying the perceived quality of the product. For example, if you wanted to be seen as a successful businessman, you would buy an Armani suit.

Today branding is as powerful as ever. “Dude, it’s a Dell” without a doubt helped make Dell and computers synonymous. Sichel has helped many companies with the branding of their logos and we can help you too. You can reach us at 818-255-0862 for your FREE quote or click the link below and fill out the short form.
